The Newton High School softball team stayed close to traditional Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I power Salina South Tuesday at Kelsch Field, but just couldn’t close the win,

Newton lost to the Cougars 11-9 and 15-13.

The Railers took a 2-1 lead through three innings in the first game. South came back with five runs in the fourth inning and five more in the fifth. Newton climbed back in the game with two runs in the fifth, four in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Bailey Webber led South’s offense, going two for four hitting with two RBIs. Tatum Forrester and Lainey Howard each drove in two runs. Abby Miller went three for four, while Jenna Henderson went two for three with a solo home run each. Mataya Copes went three for four. Jadyn Zamercmk and Peyton Froome each had two hits.

Mallory Seirer hit a home run with three RBIs for Newton. Avery Treffer drove in two runs. Olivia Sandoval went two for four with an RBI. Emily Peaney went four for five hitting. Toria Thaw went two for five.

Henderson went the distance for South, allowing three earned runs on 12 hits with a walk and seven strikeouts.

Megan Watkins took the loss for Newton, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with a strikeout. McKenna Cusick finished the game, allowing one earned run on eight hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

The Railers led the second game 10-5 after four innings, but South came back with five runs each in the fifth and sixth innings to take the lead. Newton added two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

South’s offense was aided by eight Railer errors in the game. South had three errors.

Miller finished two for five hitting for South with two RBIs. Kati Rivera went two for two with an RBI.

Newton was led by Gracie Rains, going three for four with two home runs and five RBIs. It was the second two-home run game for the freshman. Olivia Sandoval went four for four with an RBI. Thaw drove in two runs. Seirer went four for five with an RBI. Peaney went three for five.

Henderson lasted just six batters and one out for South, allowing five unearned runs. Froome finished the game for the win, allowing six earned runs on 14 hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Sandoval went five innings for Newton, allowing three earned runs on eight hits with 11 walks and a strikeout. Cusick finished the game for the loss, allowing one earned run on one hit with five walks and five strikeouts.

Newton is 1-5, 0-2 in AV-CTL I play, and hosts Derby at 4 p.m. Friday at Kelsch Field.
