The city of Leavenworth is hosting a state political party convention this weekend.

The Libertarian Party of Kansas is having its annual convention in the downtown area.

Kris Logan, state party chairwoman, expects between 25 and 50 people to attend the convention.

Logan, who lives in Lansing, said she is excited to have the convention in Leavenworth County.

“I am thrilled beyond belief,” she said.

Logan said there are quite a few Libertarians in Leavenworth County. She hopes having the convention in Leavenworth will spur local members to become more active.

Logan said this weekend marks the first time the Libertarian Party has had a state convention in Leavenworth.

She said the party typically rotates the location of the state convention among Kansas’ four congressional districts.

Leavenworth County is located in Kansas’ 2nd Congressional District.

The Libertarian Party’s coordinator for the 2nd District also lives in Leavenworth County.

This year’s convention was kicked off Friday evening with a networking event at TenPenny Restaurant and Bar.

Libertarians will have a full day of activities Saturday at the Riverfront Community Center.

They will have a business meeting in the morning. During the business meeting, there will be an election of officers including a new state chairperson. Logan is not seeking re-election to her position as chairwoman.

In the afternoon, there will be breakout sessions featuring various speakers who will focus on topics such as local activism, candidate recruitment and medical cannabis legislation.

One of the breakout session speakers will be Leavenworth Mayor Jermaine Wilson, who will discuss criminal justice reform in Kansas.

The convention’s keynote address will take place Saturday evening. The speaker will be Mary Gerlt, who was the Libertarian Party’s 2018 candidate for Kansas lieutenant governor.

On Sunday morning, there will be a meeting of the executive committee of the Libertarian Party of Kansas. This meeting will take place at Home2 Suites by Hilton.
