Basehor is the fourth safest city in Kansas, according to a list compiled for a website that focuses on safety and security issues.

Basehor is the only city in Leavenworth County to appear in the top 20 of the list that recently was published on the SafeWise website, www.safewise.com.

Basehor jumped 11 positions from SafeWise's 2018 list to the rank of No. 4 for this year's list.

According to the SafeWise website, the list was prepared using FBI Uniform Crime Reporting data from 2017.

The SafeWise list looks at crime rates per every 1,000 people. Basehor has a population of about 6,000.

According to the list, Basehor has a violent crime rate of 0.69%. And the city has a property crime rate of 7.88 percent.

Basehor Police Chief Bob Bob Pierce said most of the crimes reported in Basehor are property crimes.

"We do experience some property crime," he said. "It is actually pretty low."

The city of Tonganoxie is ranked at No. 31 on the SafeWise list with a violent crime rate of 2.23% per 1,000 people and a property crime rate of 10.6%. Lansing is ranked at No. 33 with a violent crime rate of 2.34% and a property crime rate of 11.31%. Leavenworth is ranked at No. 61 with a violent crime rate of 7.11% and a property crime rate of 35.08%, according to the list.
