Students at David Brewer Elementary School have been participating in a banking education program on campus.

Citizens Savings & Loan Association has partnered with the school to help educate students on how banks do business.

“The goal is to bring real-life lessons about banking,” said Chuck Moorehead, vice president of retail at the bank.

Each Friday from 7:45-8:10 a.m., students at the school participate in mock transactions that embrace the retail aspects of banking.

Students at the school are the bankers and record the transactions.

Teachers supplement the program by discussing banking concepts in their classrooms.

Moorehead said the program is a life skill initiative that teaches students how banking works.

Moorehead said the school bank program could spark an interest in students in banking and could be a future source of summer interns at the bank as the students get older.

Plans to expand the program in the third quarter of 2019 include an elementary banking curriculum.
