There are more than 310 small businesses in downtown Leavenworth.

The businesses range from retailers to boutiques to specialty shops to service professionals.

There are 25 places to eat in the 28-block downtown district.

And Leavenworth Main Street is encouraging local residents to get to know those businesses during National Small Business Week, which is celebrated each year from May 5-11.

“Downtown is the place to be,” said Wendy Scheidt, executive director of Leavenworth Main Street.

National Small Business Week “recognizes the critical contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners,” according to the U.S. Small Business Administration’s website.

More than half of Americans either work or work for a small business, according to the website, and create about two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year.

Scheidt said the downtown district in Leavenworth has much to offer.

“There is always a lot going on downtown,” Scheidt said. “There is just a huge array of unique businesses. We have more and more places that have live music. We have more and more people who live downtown. It’s a very mixed-use area. It’s a full-service downtown.”

Scheidt said shopping in downtown Leavenworth is a unique experience.

“All the merchants are fantastic,” she said. “They will become your friend. They not only want to sell products, but they want to sell you on the downtown community.”

Leavenworth Main Street will host its annual Build a Bouquet event on Saturday. Participants can purchase a vase for $5 at the LMS office, 416 Cherokee St., starting at 9:30 a.m. Then they can visit 22 downtown businesses to pick up a flower from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Going to all the businesses, you can find a Mother’s Day gift that you can find in no other place but downtown Leavenworth,” Scheidt said.

The Leavenworth City Market opens a new season Saturday as well. The flea market, which is held on the second Saturday of each month during the spring and summer, is from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Haymarket Square.

The Leavenworth Live Free Outdoor Concert Series will once again be held on the second Saturday of the month during June, July and August at Haymarket Square.
