The city of Lansing is hosting two events this weekend for children.

On Friday, the city will host the inaugural Kids’ Outdoor Movie Nite at Kenneth W. Bernard Community Park. The film “Incredibles 2” will be shown on a large projector screen at the playground in the park. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. There is no admission charge.

The park is located at 15650 Gilman Road, approximately 2.5 miles west of Main Street in Lansing.

There will be popcorn, face painting and music. The event is sponsored by Tiffany Andrews State Farm.

The Lansing Parks and Recreation Department will host the 18th annual Fishing Derby at Bernard Park from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

The derby will end at 11 a.m. Attendees then can stay for a free lunch and an awards ceremony.

Registration is $5 per child. The cost includes bait and a picnic lunch. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets.

The event is for children 15-under. Participants should bring a fishing pole and be accompanied by an adult.

Those attending but not participating in the derby can purchase lunch for $3 per person.

Registration forms are available at the Lansing Parks and Recreation Department, 109 S. 2nd St., or can be downloaded at www.lansing.ks.us

Registration on the day of the derby will be $10 per child. Preregistration must be received by 4:30 p.m. Friday.

In the event of inclement weather, call 913-727-5555 for a cancellation notice.

“This is just a fun weekend geared for kids,” said Tim Dossey, event and marketing coordinator for the city of Lansing. “These are really nice community events for families.”

Organizers are hoping for better weather conditions this weekend than last weekend when rain altered the schedule for the annual Lansing DAZE Festival and Brew, Blues & Bar-B-Q.

Friday’s forecast is calling for partly cloudy skies with a high of 63 degrees. Saturday’s forecast is calling for cloudy skies with a high of 65 degrees.

The city will hold another free event June 7 when Ichiban Japanese Steakhouse hosts the Lansing City Limits Music Series. Erica McKenzie will perform at 5:30 p.m.

The restaurant is located at 871 W. Eisenhower Road.
