Following a tradition of more than 30 years, the Leavenworth County Council on Aging will host its annual Senior Citizens Picnic next week in honor of Older Americans Month, which is celebrated each year in May.

This year’s event will take place from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 17 at the Fraternal Order of Eagles 55, 300 S. 20th St.

The event typically attracts approximately 300 people, according to Scarlet Ross, activities director for the organization.

The event includes door prizes, raffles, bingo and a sloppy Joe lunch that includes potato salad, baked beans and dessert. The band Bent Knee Gospel will perform.

Admission is $5 per person. The event is for people 50-over.

Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Council on Aging, 1830 S. Broadway St., Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets also can be purchased at the door on the day of the event.

It has been 51 years since the Older Americans Act was passed by Congress. The act is designed to raise awareness and encourage community involvement for senior citizens.

The Council on Aging features nutrition programs, transportation assistance, adult day care, legal assistance, health services and more to Leavenworth County senior citizens.
