A Leavenworth resident was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation following a house fire Friday morning, a Fire Department spokesman said.

A firefighter also suffered minor burns.

The fire was reported at 9:30 a.m. in the 700 block of South 10th Street.

The resident was already out of the home when firefighters arrived. Flames could be seen coming from two windows, Leavenworth Fire Marshal Andy Brooks said.

He said windy conditions made extinguishing the fire more difficult.

“The wind just kind of drove the fire through the structure,” Brooks said.

He said fire spread to concealed spaces.

Members of the Fort Leavenworth Fire Department were called to assist Leavenworth firefighters.

Brooks said the firefighter who suffered burns did not need to go the hospital.

The fire resulted in significant damage to the house. The cause of the fire has not been determined.
