Leavenworth city commissioners have taken a step toward vacating a one-block section of Sixth Street.


Commissioners reached a consensus Tuesday to advance an ordinance that, if approved, would vacate the right-of-way for Sixth Street between Metropolitan Avenue and Cheyenne Street.


That section of Sixth Street, which already has been closed and torn up, will become part of a commercial development in the 500 and 600 blocks of Metropolitan Avenue. The development includes the sites of the former Commander’s Inn and Armed Forces Bank.


According to information provided to commissioners, the developer has provided accommodation to companies that have utilities in the area of the Sixth Street right-of-way that is being vacated. The developer has been able to accommodate the utilities through the retention of some utility easements and the creation of other easements.


Commissioners conducted a public hearing on the proposed street vacation when they met Tuesday. No one from the public provided comment during the hearing.


The ordinance for the street vacation likely will come up for a final vote in two weeks.


Commissioners conducted a second public hearing Tuesday before approving an amendment to the annual action plan for the city’s Community Development Block Grant program.


The plan is being amended to reflect additional federal funding for the CDBG program. The city is receiving an additional $119,897 in funding as a result of the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act. This is the second round of additional funding the city has received for the CDBG program this year.


Julie Hurley, director of Planning and Community Development, said $108,897 of this second round of funding will be used to help public service agencies. The remaining $11,000 will be used for administration expenses.


No one from the public provided comment during the hearing.
