Republican candidates have won three local races for the Kansas House of Representatives, according to unofficial results released on election night.

Incumbent state Rep. David French has been reelected in the House’s 40th District. French’s fellow Republican Pat Proctor has won in the 41st District. And Republican Tim Johnson has won in the 38th District.

The 38th District includes the cities of Basehor and Linwood and extends into Johnson County.

The 38th District seat was open this year because the incumbent, Willie Dove, chose to run for the state Senate.

According to a website for the Kansas Secretary of State’s Office, Johnson received 9,139 votes and Sherri Grogan, a Democrat, received 5,313 votes.

"I’m very amazed and thankful for the support of the people of the district," Johnson said.

Johnson said he was pleasantly surprised by the vote count, which he called powerful numbers.

The 40th District includes the city of Lansing and a portion of the city of Leavenworth.

French received 5,222 votes. His Democratic challenger, Joana Scholtz, received 4,441 votes, according to the Secretary of State’s Office.

French said he had mixed feelings about Tuesday’s election. While he is pleased to have been reelected, he was disappointed that Republican candidates lost in local races for the state Senate.

The 41st District includes much of the city of Leavenworth. This also was an open seat this year because the incumbent, Jeff Pittman, chose to run for the state Senate.

Proctor received 3,770 votes. Democrat Mike Griswold received 3,362 votes, according to the Secretary of State’s Office.

"Now the work begins," Proctor said.

Proctor said he is ready to "start fighting for the people of Leavenworth."

Griswold currently serves as the mayor of Leavenworth.

Also in Leavenworth County, Lance Neelly was elected in the 42nd District of the Kansas House of Representatives.

Neelly was running unopposed in the general election after defeating incumbent state Rep. Jim Karleskint in the August Republican primary.

The 42nd District includes the cities of Easton and Tonganoxie and extends into Douglas County.
