Roy Herbert Smith Sr., 78, Leavenworth, passed into the presence of God early Saturday morning, Aug. 25, 2018.
Roy Herbert Smith Sr., 78, Leavenworth, passed into the presence of God early Saturday morning, Aug. 25, 2018. He was born March 11, 1940, in Augusta, Georgia, to the late Willie Joe and Artie Lou (Stone) Smith Sr.
He attended Lucy Laney school in Augusta. During his early years, Roy along with his first cousin Ervin Smith, grew up almost as “besties” twins and they were always dressed alike. They were inseparable.
In 1961 Roy met the love of his life, Clara Thurston. They married in 1961 in Key West, Florida. To this union six children were born.
Roy loved playing golf! He certainly enjoyed caddying during the Masters while in Augusta. One of his favorite past times was watching cowboy and western movies. Later in life they moved to Leavenworth where his sister and brother resided. Roy was employed at the battery factory and later worked at the golf course at Fort Leavenworth. He attended the Independent Baptist Church until his health began to fail. Roy loved his family dearly. He was a very talkative man with a unique sense of humor.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife of 57 years, Clara Smith; four daughters, Marcia Campbell, Atlanta, Georgia, Rosalind (Anthony) Chapman, Illewellyn “Ellie” (Jonathan) Ogletree, both of Leavenworth, Kansas and Artie Allison, Fort Meyers, Florida; three sons, Roy Smith Jr., Charlton Smith and Sean Smith, all of Leavenworth, Kansas; a sister, Dorothy Chapman, New York, New York; a brother, Claude (Betty) Smith, Snellville, Georgia; a sister-in-law, Nancy Smith, Augusta, Georgia; 24 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; his “childhood cousin-twin” Ervin Smith, Ghana, Ohio; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Kathryn Daniel, Leola Comer and Claudette Smith; three brothers, Willie Joe Smith Jr., Jesse Smith Sr. and Albert Smith; and a daughter, Lois Sanders.
He lives on in our hearts and will be missed.
A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 31, 2018, at the Independent Baptist Church. Arrangements in care of R.L. Leintz Funeral Home.
