Carolyn D. (VanWinkle) Norman, 76, Leavenworth, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018 at St. Luke's on the Plaza, Kansas City, Missouri.
Carolyn D. (VanWinkle) Norman, 76, Leavenworth, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018 at St. Luke’s on the Plaza, Kansas City, Missouri. Carolyn was born to Orville and Cordia (Strahan) VanWinkle on April 7, 1942 in Neosho, Missouri. She graduated from Chanute High School and went on to graduate from Neosho Co. Junior College, and Pittsburgh State University, where she received her Masters Degree. Carolyn’s passion for education was shared with those around her. She was a teacher at Petrolia School 1964-1965, after which she continued to educate young minds at David Brewer Elementary from Sept. 1, 1968- April 7, 2010 teaching 2nd grade and substituting many others. Carolyn enjoyed bowling on the Teachers League, reading books, and watching Wheel of Fortune. She treasured spending time with her family, and baking, especially apple dumplings and chocolate chip cookies for family, friends, and anyone who could use a good smile.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy (Patrice) Trexler, three grandsons, Gentry (Kortney) Trexler, Justin Trexler, and Gavin Trexler; two great-grandsons, Owen and Evan Trexler; three brothers, Eugene VanWinkle, Wilbur (Becky) VanWinkle, Larry (Donna) VanWinkle; five sisters, Colene Davidson, Hazel McGee, Wilma (John) Leroy, Wanda (Michael) Stefanic, Lora (Phil) West. She will also be missed by her many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and their spouses.
She is proceeded in death by her only true love her husband, Wayne F. Norman, her first grandson, Nolan Kyle Bowman, her parents, Orville and Cordia VanWinkle, and her in-laws, Chelsea and Sierra Baker Norman; two nephews, Duane Rayborn and Zeb VanWinkle; and niece, Melissa Hammer.
A Celebration of Life will be held at noon on Sept. 16, 2018 in Central Park Community Building, 101 South Forest Chanute, KS 66720.
