Willard Howard Lohrenz, 87, died Jan. 11, 2019, at University of Kansas Medical Center after a short illness. Willard was born in Ulysses, Kansas, to Abe and Carrie (Berger) and later moved to Vernon, where he graduated from the Yates Center high school. After serving in the U. S. Army at Fort Sill during the Korean War, Willard lived primarily in Rush County, where he married Janice Wells Lohrenz, raised three children and managed a family farm.
Willard moved to Leavenworth in the late 1980s and remained a Leavenworth resident for the rest of his life. He found a new lease on life through the alcohol treatment program at the “Dom” and ended up working at the VA’s CLC for many years as a CNA. He found good friends in Leavenworth, particularly his dear friend Bill Abbott. He loved his fishing boat and the many hours spent at Heim Lake. His family thanks the staff at Homestead Assisted Living and MedicaLodges Leavenworth for keeping “Bill” alive and well for the last several years. Despite being in a wheelchair, he was happy and found ways to keep busy. Thanks for getting him out of the mud, buying him potato chips and letting him boss you around!
Willard is survived by his three children: Brad Lohrenz (Richard Byrne), Kinderhook, New York, Brian Lohrenz, Wichita; Valerie Johnson (Steve), Salina; sister, Hazel “Sis” Young, Dexter; and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Don Lohrenz, and brother-in-law, Ed Young.
Burial will be at Leavenworth National Cemetery, with a committal service scheduled for Friday, March 22, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. Friends are invited to attend.
