Frances Marian (Gruendel) McEvoy, 101, Leavenworth died Monday, May 13, 2019, at Twin Oaks Health and Rehab, Lansing, Kansas. She was born Oct. 6, 1917, on the Gruendel Family farm near Hoge, Kansas, in rural Leavenworth County. She was the eighth and youngest child born to August and Marie Louise Elise (Rehme) Gruendel.
She attended Maginnis Country Grade School and Tonganoxie High School, where she graduated in 1935 as class valedictorian. After one year of studies at the Lawrence Business College, Frances was employed at the Leavenworth County Treasurer’s Office from 1936-1941.
On Jan. 29, 1942, Frances married Vincent DePaul McEvoy at Sacred Heart Church in Kickapoo, Kansas. After 63 years of marriage, he preceded her in death on Sept. 21, 2005. She was also preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Wilson Gruendel, Henry Gruendel, Joseph Gruendel and Theodore Gruendel; and three sisters, Lena Hitzeman, Helen McGraw and Marie Rohl.
Frances worked alongside her husband Vincent, as the bookkeeper at the Standard Oil Company Bulk Plant at 1101 Osage in Leavenworth for over 25 years until their retirement in 1974.
She was a longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Leavenworth.
Frances is survived by her three sons, Thomas V. McEvoy and wife, Janet, Deacon Timothy C. McEvoy and wife, Ellen and Rev. David D. McEvoy, O.Carm., all of Leavenworth; seven grandchildren, Vincent A. McEvoy, Matthew I. McEvoy and wife, Tisha, John T. McEvoy, Sr., Daniel P. McEvoy and wife, Linda, Brendan G. McEvoy, Marie Elise McEvoy Harper and husband, Jemale and Joseph L. McEvoy; and sixteen great-grandchildren, Riley and Madeline McEvoy, Mackenzie Wilk-Chavez and Teagan McEvoy, Carlee-Anne, John Thomas, Jr., Isaac, Caroline and Riliegh McEvoy, Antoine, Cruz de Jesus and Bailey Frances McEvoy and Mia, Gabriel, Annelise and Presley Harper.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 16, 2019, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 306 North Broadway, Leavenworth, with the recitation of the Rosary at 6 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, at St. Joseph Church, officiated by her son, Rev. David D. McEvoy, O.Carm. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Church Cemetery in Kickapoo. Memorials may be given to St. Joseph Church, Leavenworth. Arrangements entrusted to R.L. Leintz Funeral.
