Barbara Jean Kersten, 69, passed away on July 11, 2019, at her home after a short illness with pancreatic cancer.
Barbara was born on Jan. 20, 1950, in Leavenworth, Kansas, to Robert E. and Cora Swann. She attended St. Joseph Catholic Grade School and graduated from Immaculata High School in 1968.  She attended Kansas State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education in 1972.  She married Kenneth O. Kersten on Jan. 8, 1972, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Leavenworth.  
Barbara taught third grade at MacArthur Elementary School at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, for five years before staying at home to raise her three daughters, Aundria, Natalie and Charlotte. After Kenny passed away in April of 1993, Barbara became the owner and operator of Kersten Concrete Construction and ran the company for 25 years.   
Barbara’s proudest title was “Non”- she was a loving grandmother to three little boys she loved dearly. She was an amazing mother and loved her family with all of her heart.  She enjoyed being with her daughters whenever possible, quilting, baking homemade pies, and cherished her home and flower gardens.
Barbara is survived by her daughters, Aundria (Aladdin) Ashkar and their two sons, Laith and Zaid, Olathe, Kansas, Natalie Kersten, Denver, Colorado and Charlotte (Brandon) Smith and son, Kenny, Breckenridge, Colorado; her brother, Robert (Carol) E. Swann Jr.,,Leavenworth; and sister, Rita Swann, Portland, Oregon.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Kersten; a nephew, Glenn Swann, parents, Robert and Cora Swann; and grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. Leo J. Swann, and Mr. and Mrs. James F. Hutchinson.
Visitation will be Wednesday, July 17, 2019, from 6-8 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Leavenworth. A rosary will be said at 6 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, July 18, 2019, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, followed by burial at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Lansing. A luncheon will follow at the Riverfront Community Center, Leavenworth.
Memorials may be made to the Barbara Kersten Memorial Scholarship Fund, which has been established in her honor for students in need who wish to purse higher education, as well as St. Joseph Church.
