Eddie John Walter, 68, Leavenworth, passed away unexpectedly on Aug. 1, 2019 at his home.

Eddie John Walter, 68, Leavenworth, passed away unexpectedly on Aug. 1, 2019 at his home. He was born to Joseph and Bertha (Andersen) Walter on June 29, 1951 in Yankton, South Dakota.
Eddie grew up on the rural family farm in Freeman, South Dakota.
He attended Independence 86 grade school, Freeman Public High School, where he was looking forward to attending his 50th year reunion at the end of the month. He graduated from Southern State Teachers College in Springfield, South Dakota.
Shortly after graduating, Eddie enlisted and served 24 years in the U.S. Army where he received many medals and accolades. During his time in the Army he met his first wife, Nan Suk, who preceded him in death in 2000. From this union, survives a daughter, Kristy (Kenneth) Jones. Eddie later married his wife, Jane, who survives at the home. From this marriage survives an adopted son, Justin (Dori) Walter. Eddie also leaves behind to cherish his memory four sisters, Mary Jo Walter, Donna (Roger) Schoon, Judy (Tom) Olsen and Janet (Warren) Scherschligt; seven grandchildren, Madailein, Dominick, Abby, Clay, Kalithea, Kenneth and Leon; and many nieces and nephews.  Eddie was preceded in death by his first wife, Nan Suk; his parents; and a brother in law, Delmer Walter
He enjoyed playing cards, drinking, going to monthly Rod and Gun club meetings, and was always up for a good debate. He loved to come home to Freeman for the annual 4th of July celebration.
Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 8, 2019, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
