Dorothy M. Burgess, 90, 15036 Hillside Road, Leavenworth, died Tuesday, Oct. 8 at St. Luke’s Cushing Memorial Hospital, Leavenworth.

She was born Feb. 12, 1929 at Stoutland, Missouri, only daughter of James A. and Claudine (Henson) Newell. After attending Stoutland High School, she married Jack A. Burgess on Jan. 7, 1946.

She is survived by her daughter Lois J. Owen (Keith) and her son Billy, both of the home; granddaughter Michelle Barber, Verona Missouri,  and grandsons Stephen Owen, Raytown, Missouri, and Philip Owen, Overland Park, Kansas, plus seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her younger brother Kenneth Newell, and her younger son David Burgess.

She moved to Garden City, Kansas, in 1948 where she was a homemaker and was later employed at Woolworth’s. In 1968, she and her husband moved to Lansing where he embarked on his career with the United States Penitentiary and she continued her career at Woolworth’s. She maintained her home in Lansing, in the same house on Elmwood, for 50 years, until co-residence with her daughter became advisable last November.

Dorothy was active in Leavenworth Baptist Church and helped found Lansing First Southern Baptist.   While her health allowed, she was an amazing cook. Her picture adorns the wall of a Brazilian restaurant whose owner she helped educate. She was an avid quilting and crocheting enthusiast and a cut-throat pitch player where it was her great delight to defeat her grandchildren. Her kindness to the less fortunate, dumplings and lightning quick wit will be greatly missed.

Visitation for Mrs. Burgess will be at Leavenworth Baptist Church, Broadway and Spruce, at noon Thursday, Oct. 10, 2019 followed by the funeral.  Interment will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, Richland, Missouri, at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, 2019.
