Daniel Eugene Dorris, Leavenworth, Kansas passed away Sunday, Jan. 5, 2020. Born April 7, 1947 in Columbia, Missouri to Robert and Muriel (Fichtel) Dorris, he was raised in Fort Worth, Texas and graduated from Nolan High School in 1966. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in History and Political Science at Texas Tech University and later completed his Masters in Library Science from Emporia State University. He served in the U.S. Army as a linguist and was stationed in San Diego, California and Fort Riley, Kansas. After serving in the military he began work in Federal Civil Service at the Command General Staff College (CGSC) in Leavenworth, Kansas in 1976. Moving to Fort Monroe, Virginia and Fort Knox, Kentucky to receive additional training ultimately returning to Fort Leavenworth in 1982 where he worked for over 20 years before he retired in 2005. In 2006 he began working in the Keleher Learning Commons, formerly known as DePaul Library, at University of Saint Mary. He continued to work at the university up until his death.
Daniel was married in June of 1972 to Barbara K. (Rogers) Dorris in Junction City, Kansas. He is survived by his daughter and son in law, Megan (Dorris) and Justin Cooley, Kansas City, Missouri, one grandson, Emmett J. Cooley, sister, Bobbie Jean (Dorris) Brown, brother in law, Don Brown, one nephew, and three nieces. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, one sister, Jackie (Dorris) Flanagan, maternal grandparents, Viton and Etta (Balff) Fichtel, paternal grandparents, Gordon and Reable (Scott) Dorris.
A memorial celebration of life will be held at University of Saint Mary in the Keleher Learning Commons on Jan. 17, 2020 from 3-6 p.m. with a service at 4 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Angel Fund at University of Saint Mary in his name.
