John Wilde Flannigan Jr., 76, Leavenworth, passed away on Oct. 1, 2020, after battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia and other illnesses for several years. The oldest of seven children, he was born to John W. Sr. and Elizabeth D. Flannigan on May 26, 1944, in Reno, Nevada. He is preceded in death by his parents and a younger brother, Peter Flannigan.
Mr. Flannigan is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marie E. Flannigan, Leavenworth, Kansas, and his children: John (Kathleen) Flannigan, San Antonio, Texas, Jacqueline (Vincent) Lai, Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Shawn (Hee Sue) Flannigan, Leavenworth, Kansas. He is survived by six grandchildren: Sarah Flannigan, Kevin Flannigan, Claire Lai, Maeve Lai, Ayden Flannigan, and Quinn Lai. He is also survived by five siblings: Thomas (Joellen) Flannigan, Theresa (David) Spearing, Charlotte (Harvey) Nimmo, Samuel Flannigan, Donna (Dwayne) Pauli, five nieces and three nephews.
Mr. Flannigan served his country as a member of the United States Army for 24 years, serving two separate tours during the Vietnam conflict. During his time in the Army, he was able to travel the world, visiting numerous countries and making lifelong friends. After retiring from the Army in 1987, he continued to serve his country as a defense contractor and Department of the Army civilian for another 19 years until he retired. He loved gardening and was an active member of the Leavenworth Master Gardeners.
Funeral services with military honors will take place at the Leavenworth National Cemetery on Oct. 15, 2020 at 11 a.m. Due to COVID restrictions, facial masks and social distancing are required. Also due to COVID, there will be no reception following the service. In lieu of flowers, it is asked that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in his name.
