To the editor:
We’re writing in strong support of the USD 453 no tax increase bond proposal. The plan, which has been more than a year in the making and involved the work of many members of our district and citywide community, goes a long way in addressing the current and future needs of our students in a responsible, measured manner. It provides much needed relief of overcrowding at our elementary and middle schools, adds a secure entrance at our high school and creates an early education center that allows all of our children to be prepared for long-term educational success.
The plan accomplishes this without a tax increase and allows our district to take advantage of state funding while it is still an option.
This bond proposal is an important next step for not only the school district but our community at-large. There is nothing more critical to a thriving and prosperous city than a quality educational system. While we certainly have plenty to be proud of, we must continue to invest in that system in order to best equip our students with the skills needed for a quickly changing work environment, not to mention remain competitive with our neighboring cities.
We have a choice. We can spend our time looking backward, picking apart past decisions by a board that no longer exists or turn our focus to the future – of our children and our Leavenworth. We hope you’ll join us in moving ahead and vote yes on the June 15 bond question.
