To editor:

I am writing this letter in response to Mr. Rett Rogers’ attack letter to the editor against state Rep. Jeff Pittman.

I am not a politician, and until recently when it came to politics, Will Rogers’ “All I know is just what I read in the papers, and that’s an alibi for my ignorance” applied to me, and for most Americans, what was accurate 95 years ago is still accurate today. Most people don’t go and hear their politicians talk. They rely on media to tell them about what their politicians do and think, or in the case of attack ads, what their opponents want them to believe their politician does and thinks.

Mr. Rett Rogers recently published an attack aimed at Leavenworth’s state Rep. Jeff Pittman, hiding it within a letter to the editor dripping with butterflies and rainbows and only at the very end of the editorial showing his true colors and attacking Rep. Pittman. It is not until the last sentence that the reader discovers that Mr. Rogers is the chairman of the Leavenworth County Republican Party. So let me state right here, well before the last sentence, that I am the vice chairman of the Leavenworth County Democratic Party.

The fact that Republicans feel the need to resort to attack ads and attack letters to the editor should tell the educated reader something right off the bat. Their attempts to disguise the attacks with psalms of sunshine and Christian salvation only reinforces the desperation they attempt to hide.

I first met Jeff Pittman when he knocked on my door campaigning in 2016. Like many Americans, 2016 marked the birth of my political awareness which led to my involvement in Leavenworth politics and the development of an association with Jeff and Holly Pittman. I am proud to call them friends and equally proud to say that I voted for Jeff in 2016 and will again in 2018. I have found him to be an individual of impeccable integrity who stands on his own accomplishments and does not and will not resort to attack ads. He has no need. The people of Leavenworth and District 41 can see for themselves all that he has done for them. Those who say otherwise do so to hide their own shortcomings.

So please don’t let attack ads persuade you on Nov. 6. Vote because of the man, not because of the dirt thrown by his opponent.

“If the Lord can see his way clear to bless the Republican Party the way it’s been carrying on, then the rest of us ought to get it without even asking.” Thanks again to Will Rogers.

Editor’s note: Jeffrey M. Howards is the vice chairman of the Leavenworth County Democratic Party.
