Robert William Day

Robert William Day, 103, retired Foreign Service Officer and a native of Leavenworth, Kan., died on July 4, 2022, in Tallahassee, Fla., where he had resided since 1972.

Mr. Day graduated from Leavenworth Senior High School in 1938, attended the University of Nebraska, University of Kansas and the University of Indiana. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and served 12 years with the U.S. Treasury Department, U.S. Air Corps, the National War Housing Agency and the U.S. Public Health Service.

In 1952, he became a Foreign Service Officer in the Diplomatic Service and served a total of 32 years in the federal service. In addition to two Washington, D.C. assignments, Mr. Day was posted in Baghdad, Iraq; Tehran, Iran; Munich, Germany; and Accra, Ghana, West Africa. During his service years, he traveled extensively in the Middle East, Europe and Africa. He also worked for the State of Florida for many years after retiring from the federal government and retiring to Florida in 1972.

Mr. Day was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Tallahassee, The American Legion, Air Force Association, Diplomatic and Consular Officers Association, The American Foreign Service, Foreign Service Retiree’s Association of Florida, and was past President of the International Christian Leadership Club.

He is survived by his daughter Betsey L. Leonard and his grandson Jack D. Leonard, III, both of Westminster, Md., and several nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents Minor H. and Anna J. Day, wives Charlotte L. Day, Dorothy J, Day and Ruth E. Day, his daughter Shaula L. Noonan and four deceased sisters, Gladys M. Day, Hazel D. Anderson, Bessie L. Reynolds, and Frances D. Cary.

There will be a viewing held at the Culley’s Meadow Wood Funeral Home at 1737 Riggins Road in Tallahassee on Saturday, July 9 from 1 to 3 p.m. followed by a memorial service at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest in the Day Family plot at Mount Muncie Cemetery in Lansing, Kan.
