The Leavenworth Pioneers baseball team is hosting the first part of their summer camp this week.

Monday through Wednesday, kids in the 8-under to 18-under age groups participated in a catching and pitching camp.

The camps were run by Joe Allison. Allison is the head coach for the Leavenworth Pioneers High School baseball team as well as the president for the Leavenworth Junior Pioneers baseball club. He was pleased with the turnout of the first part of camp.

“The turnout has been outstanding,” Allison said. “I expected to have 15 catchers and 25 pitchers and we had 30 catchers almost 65 pitchers.”

This is the third year of the catching camp and the first for pitching. Allison plans to keep the two together for the future as it allows both groups to improve together.

The first hour of the two-hour camp was spent working on fundamentals of pitching and catching. Balance, form and other mechanics were of focus. After the first hour, live drills took place with live pitching and catching to simulate various situational aspects of baseball.

Allison, along with help from his assistants and alumni players from the Pioneers baseball program, helped the kids each day.

The second part of the camp will be July 16-18 with a skills camp. The camp will run from 4-5:30 p.m. for 6-under through 8-under and 6-8 p.m. for 9-under through 18-under. Players will work on hitting, throwing, fielding and base running and will receive a form with a skills assessment. Select players at each level will be invited to play on the Junior Pioneers team and high school players could be given the option for fall baseball.

This will also be the first year that tryouts for the Junior Pioneer team will take place at the same time.

“In the past, we have done tryouts separate,” Allison said. “This year we mixed it with the camp because it will help me get more coaches and players here so we are trying it this way.”

Allison expects a bigger turnout. As of right now, there are 100 signed up, but he expects more to walk up the days of the camp.
