The Saint Mary Spires will prepare to say goodbye to the senior football players in the final home game against Southwestern on Saturday.

Head coach Jay Osborne said the senior day game is always special.

“Senior day is always special,” Osborne said. “The culmination of college football eligibility is very emotional for many of the players because of all the time spent with teammates and coaches. There is a feeling of completion and happiness that is shared.”

Osborne went on to add what has made this senior class so special.

“This year’s class has a mix of four-year starters, fifth-year guys and transfers,” Osborne said. “It is not a very big class, but they have had a profound impact and have proven the ability to persevere. These seniors have seen some very good times as well as the worst of times. The younger guys on the team have been paying attention and I think the message that will be left after this season will be very positive for our team.”

The Spires enter the game at 2-6 following a 44-38 loss at Friends University last Saturday.

Osborne said limiting turnovers has been a big key for the team this week.

“Turnovers,” Osborne said. “We need to win the turnover battle every week. We can play in every aspect of the game with anyone. This year big plays and turnovers have haunted us. We shored up some of the big play issues, but we must get better at taking care of the football.”

Osborne also said winning the turnover battle will be key for a win against Southwestern College on Saturday. The Moundbuilders enter the game 6-3 with a 5-3 KCAC record. They are coming off a 41-24 loss at Ottawa last Saturday.

With the season starting to come to a close, Osborne said the team’s desire to be successful can help the team in the final two games before the offseason work together to rebound in 2019.

“I believe our guys have a sincere desire to be successful,” Osborne said. “They like each other and understand that these next two weeks can set the stage for our next 12 months together. We are looking at our largest senior class this time next year with between 25-30. This Saturday will be important to pass the torch in a positive manner.”

The team will look to pass the torch in the positive manner on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
