The cold weather could not stop the Bobcats from remaining hot in their sectional matchup with Paola.

Basehor-Linwood would improve to 10-1 from the 28-7 victory to set the team up with one more home game against Bishop Miege next Friday with a birth to the state title game on the line.

The Bobcats got on the board first with the first of three touchdown passes from Dylan Mussett to Jacob Coleman with three minutes remaining in the first quarter.

The duo matched up again three seconds into the second quarter to go up 13-0 after a missed extra point. Mussett would add a score on a solo run with 3:57 remaining in the half to give the Bobcats a 21-0 halftime lead.

The Panthers of Paola did not quit and finally got on the board with 6:55 remaining to cut the lead to 21-7.

Both teams would trade drives back and forth before Mussett found Coleman again for the hat trick and put the score up to 28-  with 6:04 remaining.

The Bobcats would hold on and win the sectional playoff game. Basehor-Linwood outgained the Panther s 413-234 with the Bobcats having 267 passing yards to just 36 for Paola. Mussett finished the night 17-23 for 267 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Seven of those completions went to Coleman who racked up 125 yards on the night. Austin Coulson and Jace Friesen led the team with a combined 15.5 tackles and Joe Phillips grabbed an interception for the Bobcat defense. Head coach Rod Stallbaumer said getting to advance in the playoffs is an accomplishment.

“Just advancing in the playoffs is a big accomplishment,” Stallbaumer said. “In five years we’ve only lost to (Bishop) Miege and Eudora in the playoffs, and Eudora was by one point. So for us as a program to get to this point, we kind of expected to get there. It’s always good to get here and play again next week.”

The coach said they are fortunate to get the team at home this time and mentioned how they are still the reigning champions until someone knocks them off. Stallbaumer said the team will have to continue the strong practices they’ve had in recent weeks to prepare for a team that is balanced.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. next Friday.
