The Leavenworth Pioneers fell in their second game of the season Thursday night in a 9-0 loss to St. James Academy.

The loss came the day after the Pioneers fell 4-2 to Piper.

The Thunder jumped out first scoring in the 12th minute to go up 1-0. The Thunder would add two more goals to go up 3-0 at halftime.

The Thunder added a goal 35 seconds into the second half and began to pull away to win 9-0.

The Thunder controlled much of the game keeping possession on Leavenworth’s side of the field for much of the contest.

Despite the loss, head coach Greg Ruff said he was proud of his team.

“I’m just proud of them,” Ruff said. “They didn’t give up. (St. James) is a tough team. They’re going to probably finish in the top four in 4-3-2-1A. (The Thunder) are quality across the board. We had some good performances. Our captain, (Alexis) Cole stepped up. Maja Lager was excellent. She is usually our 6 but we put her back on defense tonight to hold them. I think if we don’t have her back there, it might have been a 10-0 game.”

Ruff said the Pioneers can learn a lot from a team like the Thunder moving forward. He said the team moved the ball well in the first half before St. James turned on another gear and shut Leavenworth down.

He told the Pioneers that they have a good team. He said they just have to work on some little things and break old habbits.

“And if we get there, that will be a good team to watch,” Ruff said.
