After leading 30-7 at the half, Basehor-Linwood (1-1) staved off Lansing’s (1-1) comeback bid to win 30-28 Friday at Keister Field behind four total touchdowns from Bobcats' quarterback Chase Torkelson.
It was an anticipated rematch between the United Kansas Conference rivals after the Lions handed the Bobcats their only regular-season loss last year 14-13 at Lansing.
The Bobcats struck first with a field goal after recovering a Lion fumble to take an early lead. On the next drive, the Lions got in the end zone on a five-yard run by Derrick Robinson to lead 7-3. The lead didn't last long as Torkelson hit a streaking Jordan Brown for a 32-yard score to put the Bobcats up 10-7.
Another Lions fumble set the Bobcats up with favorable field position and they made good on it as Torkelson scored on a designed run to put BLHS up 17-7.
It was back and forth in the second quarter until the Bobcats drove inside the 10-yard line where Torkelson scored his second rushing touchdown of the night. A failed extra point left the Lions trailing 23-7 going into halftime.
Basehor-Linwood came out swinging in the second half as Torkelson added his third touchdown on the ground making it 27 unanswered points from the Bobcats.
Lansing opened the fourth quarter with a 60-yard touchdown catch and run from Malik Benson to bring the Lions within two scores at 30-14.
A bad snap on the Bobcats' ensuing possession set the Lions up inside the red zone where quarterback Luke Schneider took it in on the ground and Basehor-Linwood's lead was down to 30-21.
Lansing's defense came up with another stop and drove the field to score a third unanswered touchdown on a pass from Schneider to Robinson, cutting the deficit to 30-28.
The push was too little too late for Lansing as Torkelson and the Bobcats were able to slam the door on the Lion’s comeback bid and pick up their first win of the season.
