SALINA, Kansas – Six area wrestlers from Basehor-Linwood, Lansing and Leavenworth earned medals at the 5A wrestling state tournament Saturday at Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina.
Lansing’s Hartwell Taylor and Jacob McLain were the two top finishers. Taylor took second place in the 132-pound class and McLain also took second in the 152-pound class. Leavenworth’s Tyler Robinson bounced back from a semifinal loss Friday to advance to the third-place match before taking fourth. Basehor’s Bryce Ross took sixth in the 113-pound class, Kaden Jacobson got fifth in the 152-pound class and Josh Willcutt finished sixth in the 195-pound class.
In team scoring, Lansing finished 13th with 48 points, Basehor-Linwood tied for 14th with 40 and Leavenworth finished in 27th with 15.
Leavenworth’s Julian Long dropped his first match Saturday to Salina Central’s Isaac Phimvongsa by fall in 3:28, ending his tournament.
Ross fell in his first match Saturday to Shawnee Height’s Brock Ferguson by fall in 3:00. In the fifth-place match against Maize’s Camden Padgett, Ross fell by a 6-1 decision to finish in sixth place.
Lansing’s Camden Maestas advanced to the consolation semifinals with a 6-4 overtime win against Newton’s Colin Bybee. Due to an injury, Maestas was forced to forfeit his consolation semifinal match, ending his tournament.
Basehor’s Connor McMillen saw his tournament end with an 11-5 loss to Wichita Northwest’s Camden Aldrich.
Taylor faced Goddard’s Jerrdon Fisher in the state title match and was defeated by a 9-1 major decision to finish in second.
Jacobson advanced to the consolation semifinals after defeating Bishop Carroll’s Andrew Husband by fall in 2:47. He fell to Blue Valley South’s Daniel McMullen in the next round by a 3-2 decision. In the fifth-place match against Spring Hill’s Wyatt Dickie, he won by a 4-3 decision to take fifth place.
McLain faced Maize’s Devin Gomez, who was 25-0 coming into the day, in the championship match and was defeated by an 11-3 major decision.
Basehor’s Josh Willcutt defeated Seaman’s Jaxon Thomas by fall in 1:43 to advance to the consolation semifinals. He defeated Wichita North’s Micah Carter by a 7-3 decision to advance to face Leavenworth’s Tyler Robinson for a shot at the third-place match. In a rematch of the regional finals, Robinson came out on top again by a 6-1 decision to advance to the third-place match. Willcutt moved to the fifth-place match where he fell to St. James’ Isaac Stean by fall in 2:47 to take sixth.
Robinson took on Arkansas City’s Deston Miller in the third-place match but was defeated by an 8-3 decision and took fourth.
Basehor’s Zane Kinkaid fell in the consolation quarterfinals to Turner’s Joseph Castle by a 5-0 decision to end his tournament.
Lady Bobcats win UKC regular-season title
Basehor-Linwood girl’s basketball (14-6) ended its season on a four-game winning streak with a 58-40 win at Leavenworth (4-16) Friday. The win also clinched the United Kansas Conference regular-season championship for the Lady Bobcats. The Lady Bobcats come into the sub-state tournament as the third seed and will host Highland Park out of Topeka Wednesday. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Lady Pioneers will travel to St. Thomas Aquinas Wednesday for their sub-state matchup. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Lansing girl’s basketball defeated Shawnee Heights 35-34 on the road Friday to finish the season 14-6, tied atop the UKC standings. The Lady Lions start their postseason run Wednesday in the sub-state tournament. They will host their first-round matchup with Bonner Springs Wednesday. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Basehor-Linwood boy’s basketball (18-2) ended the regular season with a 75-48 win at Leavenworth (6-14) Friday. The Bobcats are the top-seed in the sub-state tournament and will host Turner Tuesday. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Pioneers will travel to Highland Park Tuesday for their first sub-state game. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Lansing defeated Shawnee Heights 60-42 on the road Tuesday to end the regular season 12-8. Malik Benson led the Lions with 11 points. Jake Jackson and Alex Mack both added ten points The Lions will host St. Thomas Aquinas Tuesday in the first round of the sub-state tournament. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Pleasant Ridge (11-8) fell in its regular-season finale Friday to Jefferson County North 49-47. Walker Adams led the Rams with 18 points with four 3-pointers. Justin Johnston added seven points with Connor Gibson and Devin Stutz both scoring six. The Rams go into the sub-state tournament as the four-seed and will host Hiawatha Monday. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Pleasant Ridge girl’s basketball dropped its regular-season finale 60-33 to Jefferson County North. Gabbriella Watkins led the Lady Rams with ten points. The Lady Rams will face Atchison County Community High School on the road Tuesday in the first round of the sub-state tournament. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
