Multiple candidates file for school board, city races
The filing deadline is still almost two months away, but several people already have filed as candidates for local city and school board positions.
As of Tuesday morning, three people had filed as candidates for the Leavenworth City Commission. They are Griff Martin, Maren Hart and Edd Hingula.
All of Leavenworth’s city commissioners serve in at-large positions rather than representing individual wards or districts. This means each candidate for the City Commission can live anywhere in the city.
Three seats on the Leavenworth City Commission are up for election this year. Those seats currently are held by Mike Griswold, Jermaine Wilson and Mark Preisinger.
None of the incumbent commissioners has filed for reelection. The deadline for filing is noon June 1, according to County Clerk Janet Klasinski.
The primary election, if a local primary is necessary, will be Aug. 3. The general election will take place Nov. 2.
Positions on other local municipal governing bodies and school boards are up for election as well.
An incumbent on the Leavenworth Board of Education has filed for reelection.
As of Tuesday morning, board member Mike Carney was the only candidate who had filed to run for the Leavenworth school board.
Board members Doug Darling and Alisa Murphy also have terms that are expiring.
Darling currently serves as the board’s president.
Members of the Leavenworth Board of Education also are elected to at-large positions.
As of Tuesday morning, one person, Ari Ryan Ailin, had filed as a candidate for the Lansing Board of Education.
Lansing school board members also are elected to at-large positions.
Four positions on the Lansing school board are up for election this year. Those positions currently are represented by Beth Stevenson, John Hattok, Cheryl Runnebaum and John Dalbey Sr.
Dalbey serves as the board’s president.
As of Tuesday morning, one person, Jeffrey Boddy, had filed as a candidate for the Basehor City Council.
Two at-large positions on the Basehor City Council are up for election this year. Those positions currently are represented by Shari Standiferd and Ty Garver.
One person, Chad A. Lough, had filed as a candidate for the Leavenworth Waterworks Board as of Tuesday morning.
The board serves as the governing body of the Leavenworth water department.
Three positions on the board are up for election this year. These positions currently are represented by Dick Gervasini, Eric Peterson and William Daniels III.
Gervasini serves as the board’s chairman.
In order to have a primary for any of the upcoming city or school board races, the number of candidates in a particular race needs to be more than three times the number of positions up for election, Klasinski said.
