Hutch CC is a nationally acknowledged tree campus. Now Master Gardeners are showing the green bounty off to visitors
The Reno County Extension Master Gardeners will hold an educational event teaching everyone about trees. The All About Trees and Garden Garage Sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 26 at Hutchinson Community College.
This free event will not only teach talk about trees, but attendees will be shown multiple varieties of trees.
"We will provide information about preferred trees for Kansas and how to plant and care for trees," said Kay Deaver, chair of the Reno County Extension Master Gardeners. "The tree tour provides a chance to see the full-grown trees."
Last summer, the Arbor Day Foundation, the largest nonprofit membership organization dedicated to tree planting, named Hutchinson Community College a 2019 Tree Campus USA.
HCC achieved the designation by meeting the program’s five core standards: maintaining a tree advisory committee, having a campus tree-care plan, dedicating annual expenditures for a campus tree program, observing Arbor Day and implementing student-service-learning projects.
Travis Carmichael, Lyon County horticulture agent, will run tours of the trees at 10 and 11 a.m.
Visitors can learn how to identify trees by branches and leaves, as well as understand how to prune and feed them.
The garage sale will have garden and landscaping items for sale. These items include decorative pots, shovels, bird houses and fencing. All sale items will be housed under a tent.
"The (Master Garden at HCC) gardens are looking fabulous right now with lots of blooms," Deaver said. "There are so many plants and so much color; it is amazing."
