A man who burglarized a Leavenworth convenience store fled with a cash register when an officer arrived on the scene, a police spokesman said.

The incident was reported at 4:29 a.m. Thursday at Fast Stop, 1031 Metropolitan Ave.

Police responded to an alarm at the business. After an officer arrived, the suspect exited the business and fled east in a vehicle, according to Maj. Dan Nicodemus, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department.

The police officer was already out of his patrol vehicle when the suspect fled, Nicodemus said.

A cash register was removed from the business.

Leavenworth County Undersheriff Jim Sherley said a deputy with the Sheriff’s Office later encountered a vehicle matching the description of the one driven by the burglary suspect in the area of 155th Street and Fairmount Road.

The deputy pursued the vehicle but called off the chase after the vehicle turned onto Kansas 7 Highway, traveling into Wyandotte County.

Sherley said the suspect initially traveled the wrong way on the highway but later crossed over into the correct lanes.

Sherley said the Bonner Springs Police Department was alerted about the vehicle.
