KU basketball’s Marcus Garrett earns preseason All-Big 12 nod
LAWRENCE — Marcus Garrett has been tabbed a preseason All-Big 12 honoree.
Garrett, a senior guard for Kansas and the league’s reigning defensive player of the year, received his first preseason All-Big 12 nod Tuesday, joining Jared Butler (Baylor), Austin Reaves (Oklahoma), Cade Cunningham (Oklahoma State), Matt Coleman (Texas) and Oscar Tshiebwe (West Virginia) as first-team selections. Butler was named the Big 12 preseason player of the year and joined Garrett as the only unanimous picks on the All-Big 12 first team, which had an extra member due to a tie in the voting.
Marcus Santos-Silva (Texas Tech) was named preseason newcomer of the year, while Cade Cunningham (Oklahoma State) was picked as freshman of the year. All-Big 12 honorable mentions included MaCio Teague and Mark Vital (Baylor), Greg Brown, Jericho Sims and Courtney Ramey (Texas), Kyler Edwards and Mac McClung (Texas Tech) and Derek Culver (West Virginia).
The All-Big 12 preseason awards are selected by the league's coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own players.
Garrett enters the 2020-21 campaign on the heels of his best season as a collegiate player. The Dallas native averaged 9.2 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.6 assists as a junior and shot 44.2% from the field and 32.7% from 3-point range. Garrett’s defensive prowess earned him national honors as the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year, with the 6-foot-5, 195-pounder also receiving that distinction from ESPN.com.
The Big 12 preseason poll will be announced Thursday.
