A Kansas high school tradition like no other is changing for the 2021 season.

The Kansas State High School Activities Association announced Thursday its schedule for the 2021 State Track and Field Championship at Cessna Stadium in Wichita. Usually a two-day event at the end of the high school spring sports season, the meet will be divided into three separate days with two classifications participating each day.

Classes 6A and 5A will kick things off on Thursday, May 27, with Classes 4A and 3A having their meet on Friday, May 28 and Classes 2A and 1A finishing out the weekend on Saturday, May 29.

All field events will still hold preliminaries and finals, while the only running events that'll have preliminaries and finals will be the 100-meter dash, girls 100-meter hurdles, boys 110-meter hurdles and the 200-meter dash. All other running events will be finals.

Field events are scheduled to kick things off each day at 8 a.m. with running events beginning at 11 a.m.

KSHSAA noted on its schedule that the 2022 meet will return to a 2-day schedule with 4A, 5A, 6A having the early sessions, with 3A, 2A and 1A having the later sessions.
