The Topeka Capital-Journal unveiled its second annual Kansas High School All-State Bass Fishing Team this weekend, with 13 anglers from across the state making the first team and seven earning a second-team nod. Two anglers also earned honorable mention, bringing the total to 22 anglers — two more than last year’s inaugural class.

The selection process takes into account both the Kansas BASS Nation (BASS) and MLF/FLW 2020-21 high school fishing seasons, which includes the SAF/TBF State Fishing Championship last month at Melvern Reservoir.

Kansas City-based Kickback Club led the way with six selections overall, as Dayne Kobriger, Logan Mothersbaugh and Jackson Opheim all earned first-team honors, while Cale Harlan, Derek Landis and Peyton Fore earned second-team nods.

Kobriger and Mothersbaugh finished third place in both the No. 1 and No. 4 qualifiers, while Opheim took fourth in the No. 4 qualifier April 10 on Wilson Reservoir fishing alongside Luke Crane and then captured second place April 25 at the SAF/TBF State Championship with Fore as his teammate.

Fore also had a fifth-place finish at the KBN Melvern qualifier.

Olathe East finished second overall with four selections — all first-team picks — following a dominating start to the season that saw the Hawks win the first two qualifiers of the season and place top five in the first three.

Wyatt Peterson

Tyler Kendrick and Ian Bellomo earned their spot on the first team after winning the season opener last September on Perry, while Wyatt Peterson and Miguel Cooper won Qualifier No. 2 on Melvern to secure their first-team nods.

Nathan Fideldy

Buhler High School returns both Nathan Fideldy and Preston Gover on the first team from last year. Fideldy and Gover earned back-to-back Kansas BASS Nation Angler Team of the Year honors in 2019 and 2020, despite picking up their first career win in the final qualifier of the KBN season this year. They also finished third at the SAF/TBF state championship and at the KBN Melvern qualifier.

Legacy Christian’s Ryder Mains and Mason Chapman also return to the first team this season after winning the SAF/TBF state title in April, in addition to a second-place finish at the KBN Perry qualifier in September. Mains and Chapman earned The Capital-Journal's High School Angler Team of the Year honor last season after finishing third in the FLW High School State Championship and sixth at the FLW High School National Championship in 2019-20. This year's winner will be announced in next week's Outdoors section.

Circle’s Trevor Cowman and Levi Nice made the first team for the first time this year after winning the March 13 KBN qualifier on Table Rock Lake in Branson, Mo. The win is believed to be the club's first-ever high school tournament victory.

Joining the three Kickback Club anglers on the second team are Cowley County’s Timber Neal and Koal Meier, who finished second on Table Rock, and Franklin County-based OutCast Fishing Club saw Brady Daniels and Cameron McClellan, both Louisburg residents, make the squad, as well. Daniels and McClellan were runners-up at the fourth KBN qualifier on Wilson.

A pair of Topekans earned honorable mention, as Capital City Club’s Nick and Kyle Herrman earned a spot in the KBN state championship tournament this season and won in the junior division at the SAF/TBF state championship.

The KBN state championship will take place June 5-6 on Milford Reservoir, with coverage of the state championship to run the following weekend in the Outdoors section.
