Patrick Nelson Delavan, 93, died Monday, November 7, 2022. Pat was born in Castlegate, Utah, to Gertrude Brennan Delavan and Henry Clark Delavan on May 30, 1929. He grew up in Trona, Calif.
Pat enlisted in the Army in 1949. He served in various units, commanding from company through brigade level, located all across the United States, Germany, Korea, Vietnam and Cambodia rising to the rank of Colonel before retiring in 1980. Following retirement from the Army, he worked with Kinder Care and Alabama’s Department of Emergency Management, finally retiring in 1993.
A veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, Pat’s military decorations include the Distinguished Service Cross our nation’s 2nd highest valor award, the Distinguished Flying Cross (1 OLC), the Bronze Star (w/V device 1 OLC), the Air Medal (16), the Purple Heart (6 OLC), Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge, Ranger Tab and Senior Army Aviator Badge.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Janis Beil; his wife, Ruth Sharpe; and his wife, Barbara Ryan; a daughter, Vivian; and son, Nelson.
Pat is survived by four children, Mike Delavan (spouse Carolyn), Francie Bartolotti (spouse Gary), Clark Delavan (spouse Janis) and Joe Delavan; and nine grandchildren.
He loved travel and adventure, reunions and letter exchanges with his battle buddies and making new friends. People liked him and he liked them. He was always the gentleman and a charmer, especially with ladies. He enjoyed his family, gardening, reading, had a great sense of humor and was a prolific limerick writer.
Visitation will be from 12 to 1 p.m. Monday, November 21, 2022, at R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Inurnment with military honors will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Leavenworth National Cemetery.
