Caution tape cordons off an area around the Leavenworth County Courthouse where a piece of the building's exterior broke away Wednesday and fell to the ground. Aaron Yoakam, buildings and grounds director for the county, said the fallen piece is from the building's water table, which is a ledge near the top of the structure. He said recent freezing and thawing may have caused the piece to break away from the building. County Administrator Mark Loughry said no one was hurt when the piece fell to the ground. Loughry referred to the damage as an example of the cost of deferred maintenance. John Richmeier
