I started making my rounds to each of the five county high school football teams this week. In truth, it’s one of my favorite parts of this job: the privilege of spending a few moments with the coaches and players during the early phases of this grueling season.

For more than 160 years, mail-in voting has been a fixture of American democracy, especially in Kansas. During the Civil War, Union soldiers stationed far from home were granted the right to vote by mail, a practice that laid the foundation for absentee voting as we know it.

Protesters voice concerns at Ray Miller Park

Protesters in Leavenworth recently gathered at Ray Miller Park over a range of issues that included the opening of an immigrant detention center and what the group cited as “executive overreach” by the present administration in Washington, D.C.While the local CoreCivic Opposition Group was present, there were two larger groups also in attendance.Indivisible Kansas City is a group whose mission states that it is “a movement that empowers and mobilizes the KC metropolitan community to defend democracy and protect our freedom.”Kansas 50501 is part of a national movement sparked earlier this year on the social media platform Reddit. The name stands for 50 protests in 50 states in one day.
