Leavenworth National Cemetery will host a wreath-laying ceremony at 2 p.m. Thursday.The "Spirit of ’45" event honors World War II veterans on the 80th anniversary of President Truman’s announcement of the unconditional surrender of Japan marking the end of World War II.

Lansing City Council casts vote in favor of RHIDs

Lansing City Council members recently approved steps leading to two Reinvestment Housing Incentive Districts, though the scope of the two is considerably different.First, the council approved Phase II of an RHID for Fairlane Houses, a project explained by developer Jeremy Greenamyre. That project includes the development of about 21 townhouse units (five triplexes and three duplexes) north of Fairlane Street and Santa Fe Drive.Typically, an RHID involves reimbursement for infrastructure such as streets and sidewalks.

Kansas City right-hander breaks strikeout record

In 22 seasons of pro baseball in Kansas City, Kansas, Julian Garcia stands alone.Garcia broke the Kansas City Monarchs single-season strikeout record in a 10-4 win over the Sioux Falls Canaries Sunday at Sioux Falls Stadium.The right-hander struck out a season-high 14 batters, raising his season total to a league-best 141. The previous record was 140, set by Tommy Collier in 2018.A right-hander known for his wipeout sweeper, Garcia has already entered the record books with the Monarchs.

Local baker celebrates 30 years in business

A steady flow of customers poured into Sis’ Sweets Saturday to help celebrate the shop’s 30 years as a downtown Leavenworth business. Big Jay, the University of Kansas mascot, made an appearance entertaining guests, while owner Dawn Monroe snapped photos and welcomed hugs from her devoted customers.
