The Leavenworth High School Raiders have their sights set on winning more national titles this year as cadets began training last week at the school.Cadets, both experienced and new recruits, were on campus by 7 a.m. for warm-up exercises and drills before tackling a course through the wooded acres above the sports fields.
According to recent reports, the summer heat is causing corn to sweat in the field. Is it the corn’s profuse perspiration causing the issue or maybe the county fair is the party responsible?More likely it’s just summer in early August.
Nearly two decades after she graduated from Lansing High School, Whitney Pakenham is returning to her alma mater, this time as coach of the team for which she once played.The 2006 Lansing graduate has been named head coach of the Lions girls’ volleyball team, and she is thrilled about the homecoming.“Our entire coaching staff is Lansing alums, so we are pumped to be bringing back some of the old traditions for these girls, as well as building some new traditions of our own,” she said. “This is going to be hard work, but it’s going to be exciting and fun, too.”Having played at Lansing from sixth through 12th grade, Pakenham has toiled away in the coaching ranks over the last 15 years.

Lansing city staff members got a tentative go-ahead to establish a rental registration program when the council discussed it at a recent work session.Though Josh Gentzler, community and economic development director, said he would bring a formal proposal to the Lansing City Council, probably in September, he and code enforcement officer Bill Linn and building inspector Dan Stade explained why it would be useful and what steps they’ve already taken.The aim, Gentzler said, is to make it easier to contact landlords as well as renters when problems arise, such as grass that needs mowing, junked vehicles, snow removal and others. Without such an inventory, it’s been difficult and sometimes impossible to contact the right people to resolve the issues.That’s particularly true if it’s an out-of-town landlord or one who has rentals organized under a shell company, which rarely has an address or other contact material.
Children will be heading back to school next week.
To the editor:I am the proud parent of two Lansing Lions. As a military family, we have had the unique opportunity to travel the country in support of our nation and as a result, my children have been part of the education systems of several districts and states.
It was a special evening for 10-year-old Marshall Johnson. He recently got to throw out the first pitch at a Kansas City Monarchs game against the Sioux City Canaries.
