School board shouldn’t have partisan agenda

To the editor:This November, voters will choose three members to serve on the Lansing school board. With three incumbents running for reelection, it’s important to look beyond campaign materials and ask: Who consistently acts in the best interest of our students, staff and community?I’m proud to support Jeff Bollin, and I’ll also be voting for Jackie Kennedy and Greg Penfield.

Port Authority aims to educate public about its mission

Ask the average person on the street what the Leavenworth County Port Authority is and what it does, and you may get a puzzled look. But representatives of that organization want to change this and demonstrate just how important the organization is to bringing jobs and dollars to Leavenworth County. While it was created by law in 1969 to provide guidance and direction for developing the port areas along the Missouri and Kansas rivers, its purpose has expanded to address additional economic development needs of the community. That’s why board member Greg Kaaz recently addressed the Lansing City Council – to continue what the organization is calling its educational campaign.

Tips for netting those summer walleye

Several years ago, a Minnesota angler joined me on a Midwestern lake that had been stocked with walleye, but few were caught. The air temperature was above 90 degrees and most anglers were fishing at night. The fisherman started tossing jigs and crankbaits in weed beds in eight to 10 feet of water.

The fate of a moderate Republican Kansas woman

When Vicki Schmidt, Kansas’ insurance commissioner, announced her run for the Republican nomination for governor with a folksy campaign video, some folks giggled at its earnestness. For my part, I liked it, mostly because, with its emphasis on non-ideological practicality, it reminded me of another competent, accomplished, moderate Republican woman in Kansas politics — Jean Schodorf, whose path Schmidt hasn’t followed, but should probably keep in mind, nonetheless. Many Kansans may miss that comparison.

Coaches team up to benefit their sport

You can tell an awful lot about the health of a sport by looking at the behaviors and beliefs of the people at the top.My friends, Leavenworth County high school girls’ wrestling is in great shape.Had a great visit with coach Jay Johnston and the Basehor-Linwood grapplers during their end-of-summer scramble camp. The Ladycats are among the state’s elite programs, and Johnston’s decision to gather his crew to learn one of the cutting-edge defensive philosophies speaks to his excitement to keep them there. But the reason why this camp sticks out to me is not necessarily the tactics and strategies being taught to the two dozen wrestlers in attendance over the two-day affair.
