BLHS senior creates octopuses for children in care units

Basehor-Linwood High School senior Bailey Jensen has been crocheting soft octopus figurines for babies in neo-natal intensive care units since 2019 as part of her community service hour requirement for the National Honor Society. Her mom had worked in several NICUs over the years and let Jensen know that studies showed that when premature babies cuddled with a crocheted octopus, they had more regular heart rates and better oxygenation.

I called offsides at halftime of the Super Bowl

How often have you said this phrase recently? “Weird times we’re living in right now.” It’s gotten so weird sometimes it’s easier not to discuss, but, here I go again. I try to keep an open mind, as I realize I’m over the hill, but dadgummit, am I the only one who thought the halftime performance for the Super Bowl was inappropriate for a program most families in America were watching together? Let me make sure I’m getting this straight.

Tim McCarver, big league catcher and broadcaster, dies at 81

Tim McCarver, the All-Star catcher and Hall of Fame broadcaster who during 60 years in baseball won two World Series titles with the St. Louis Cardinals and had a long run as the one of the country’s most recognized, incisive and talkative television commentators, died Thursday. He was 81.

Public invited to open house for bridge project

Members of the public will have the opportunity next week to learn about the plans for a new Missouri River bridge in Leavenworth. An open house for a Centennial Bridge replacement project is scheduled for 4-7 p.m.

Leavenworth County chairwoman corrects record

The chairwoman of the Leavenworth County Commission has learned she is not the first woman to serve in that position after all. When appointed last month to the position of Leavenworth County Commission chairperson by her fellow commissioners, Vicky Kaaz said records indicated she was the first woman to serve in that position.

All eyes were on coach Andy Reid as fans cheered his arrival on the Super Bowl parade route Wednesday in downtown Kansas City. The Chiefs won the Super Bowl on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles.
