Classrooms have come a long way since the days when pioneering settlers would send their children to single-room schoolhouses. Modern classrooms might be technical marvels, but one less flashy learning tool remains as valuable as ever.

How can one person tell another that their truth is invalid?

To the editor: Several days ago, the Leavenworth Times published a citizen’s letter to the editor that carried the headline, “Be ‘woke’ about what’s going on for the good of our country.’ This was in response to another citizen letter talking about “wokeism.” In the recently published letter, the writer surmised that the previous writer failed to conduct even “perfunctory research” and that being “woke” is hurting our country.

DARRELL “DUTCH” T. HOLLAND

Darrell “Dutch” T. Holland, Lt. Col. (Ret.), 92, Kansas City, Kan., passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, February 1, 2023. His parents John Turner Holland and Ever Lena “Mimi” Holland and sister Alladean have preceded him in death. Born September 30, 1930, in rural Arkansas, Darrell joined the U.S. Air Force in 1954 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1956. He held a B.S. in Mathematics from the College of the Ozarks (now University of the Ozarks), a B.S. in Meteorology from Pennsylvania State University, and an M.S. in Systems Management. His active duty career took him to Morocco, Turkey, and Japan, as well as many domestic posts. Darrell retired in 1980 at Ft. Leavenworth, Kan., but remained active in the military community, sponsoring CGSC Japanese and other international students for more than 34 years. While stationed at Ft. Riley, Kan. in 1958, Darrell was introduced to Marjorie Budden. They married in December of that year and shared 64 happy years together, with God at the center of their lives. The family they created together will remember him as a cornerstone: an involved and supportive father and grandfather who loved joyfully and unconditionally. Darrell was an avid, lifelong gardener. He was also a three-time cancer survivor. He took up Tai Chi while living in Olympia, Wash., which he later taught at the local YWCA and continued teaching when they moved back to Kansas. An outgoing and social person, Darrell inspired many with his laughter, ever-positive attitude, encouragement, natural leadership and enduring faith. Throughout his life, he was very active in church and the communities in which he lived. Darrell is survived by his wife, Marjorie “Margie” Holland, his son John Holland (Michele) and daughters Linda Cooper (Richard) and Susan Harris (Carl); five grandsons: Jeremy, Josh, Jerrod, David and Turner; two granddaughters: Alyssa (Jason) and

Arrest warrant issued in manslaughter case

An arrest warrant has been issued for a Leavenworth man facing a manslaughter charge because he failed to show up for court, according to court records. Timothy Kelzer Smith, who previously was released on bond, was scheduled to appear Friday in Leavenworth County District Court.
