Risk of grass fires elevated

The Leavenworth County government was not issuing burn permits Monday for unincorporated areas of the county because of the danger of grass fires. The county also did not issue burn permits for Saturday and Sunday.

AMERICAN HEART MONTH

Why do we observe American Heart Month every February? Well, every year more than 600,000 Americans die from heart disease. The number one cause of deaths for most groups, heart disease affects all ages, genders, and ethnicities. Risk factors include high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, and excessive alcohol use.

NUTRITION PROGRAM:

The Nutrition Department’s goal is to provide a hot, balanced and nutritious noon-day meal to older adults, age 60 and older, living in Leavenworth County. The Meals on Wheels program is dedicated to meeting nutritional needs, combating social isolation and ensuring safety. Meals on Wheels helps individuals remain independent and at home.

Local band looks for big break in music industry

Mortgage broker by day and band member by night, Basehor resident Eric Tomes and his band MCHNZ are still chasing their big break. The band will be performing at the VooDoo Lounge at Harrah’s Casino on March 4. A tour is also currently being planned this spring.

Lighting project set to begin in Lansing

Work is set to begin on designing Lansing’s Town Centre lighting project, based on an engineering contract Lansing City Council members recently approved. Public Works Director Mike Spickelmier discussed the project at the council’s recent work session.
