Lansing city offices will be closed at noon Friday and all day Monday in observance of the New Year’s holiday. City offices will reopen at 8 a.m. Tuesday. The Lansing Community Library will also be closed.

Vatican says health of retired pope Benedict XVI ‘worsening’

The health of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has worsened due to his age, and doctors are constantly monitoring the frail 95-year-old’s condition, the Vatican said Wednesday. Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni said Pope Francis, who asked the faithful earlier Wednesday to pray for Benedict, went to visit his predecessor in the monastery on Vatican grounds where the retired pontiff has lived since retiring in February 2013.

Treasurer’s Office closed Friday

The Leavenworth County Treasurer’s Office will be closed Friday. The office will be closed so employees can conduct end of the year business to close out the fiscal year, according to County Treasurer Janice Van Parys.

Now that Christmas is over, Leavenworth residents looking to get rid of their Christmas trees can stop by the city’s Brush Site. The Brush Site, where residents can drop off organic materials such as branches and grass clippings, is normally open only once a week this time of year.

Commissioners discuss battery plant project

When they met Wednesday, Leavenworth County commissioners discussed how to take advantage of additional development that may result from a planned battery plant in a neighboring county. In July, state officials confirmed that Panasonic plans to open a large manufacturing facility in DeSoto.
