Upriver ice circles likely headed our way

With the seriously cold weather lately, I am curious as to whether there will be any ice dams on the Missouri River this year. In a normal year with normal flows, it is not usually a problem because there is plenty of water flowing at a rate strong enough to prevent the river from freezing, or at least keep it from freezing too thick.

Anonymous member donates gift for post kitchen

Basehor VFW Post 11499 was gifted a generous monetary donation from an anonymous donor to upgrade its kitchen with new appliances. The $50,000 gift was received earlier this year from a post member who knew that the money would be spent on appliances to make their kitchen work more efficiently and make cooking easier for their members and other people utilizing the kitchen.

Banning books in schools is a bad idea

To the editor: What on earth is going on with the Lansing Board of Education? I have heard about other places where disgruntled parents are demanding that textbooks be purged of some materials which would make a student feel bad or uncomfortable. I think that is a very unrealistic idea.

Girls wrestlers to watch

As girls wrestling continues to grow in Kansas high schools, so does the talent in Leavenworth County. Here are 11 to watch from Basehor-Linwood, Lansing, Leavenworth and Tonganoxie high schools: 105 Narissa Hampton, Basehor-Linwood A state qualifier last season at 100 pounds, Hampton started her senior year 9-0 before suffering two losses at the Ladycat Classic, where she placed seventh.
