Local nonprofit promotes unity and peace in the community

Unity in the Community, a nonprofit organization in Leavenworth, provides mentorship and outreach programs that serve low income families while building strong relationships in the community. In 2015, Jermaine Wilson, founder of Unity in the Community, hosted a food and clothing giveaway to youth experiencing poverty in the area.

Port Authority discusses future industrial park

Members of the Leavenworth County Port Authority are discussing where a future industrial park may be located in the county. There are several industrial parks in the county, but Port Authority Chairman Chris Donnelly said they are rapidly running out of available land.

Winter storm, wind chill watches issued

The National Weather Service has issued watches for Leavenworth County in anticipation of a winter storm and bitterly cold wind chills. A winter storm watch is scheduled to be in effect from 6 a.m.

Lansing choir students to be featured in TV program

Choir students from Lansing High School will be featured on a program that will air on Christmas on Kansas City area television stations. The Lansing students will be featured on the annual “Sounds of the Holiday,” according to Brian White, director of choral activities at Lansing High School.

Rams place third at JCN

Tristen Baker, a two-time Class 2A powerlifting state champion, began his senior year even stronger, benching and squatting personal bests of 195 and 300 pounds. Baker, weighing in at 117 pounds, also cleaned 155 for a total lift of 650 pounds to easily win the 122-pound division for Pleasant Ridge on Saturday at Jefferson County North.
