Kansas board recommends ending Native American mascots

The Kansas State Board of Education on Thursday recommended that the state’s public school districts eliminate Native American mascots and branding to reduce their harmful impacts on students. The board approved a motion making a “strong recommendation” that Kansas public K-12 nontribal schools retire Native American-themed mascots and branding as soon as possible but within the next three to five years at the latest.

Filmmaker selects Basehor man’s property for set location

When David Staresinic moved with his parents to Basehor in the 1990s, the family saw their new home as a great place to raise children while having the ability to drive a few minutes out of town to enjoy the beautiful countryside. A freshman in high school at that time, Staresinic has since put down his own roots in Basehor as well as a property he purchased five years ago that is not far away which has been used for everything from camping to an outdoor movie charity event venue. Most recently, it was used as a movie set with Staresinic having a role.

We need to look inward and come together as a community

When it’s November and the temperature chooses a singular day to plummet and enter winter, we know the Veterans Day parade is upon us. The parade day in Leavenworth this Friday is gearing up to be a cold one, but you can guarantee that hundreds will be participating and even more will be watching.

Administration has led us down wrong path

To the editor: Reading the Leavenworth Times editorial page Saturday, Nov. 5, was a little surprising. Over the years I’ve watched this paper be generally fair in presenting opinions and support to “both sides” of politics, but Saturday was an all-left day. Maybe there just weren’t any conservative letters to print? Let’s hope that was the case. Reading the many left-sided letters in the run-up to this election there’s certainly a lot to take on.
