Corn-growing Midwest is the epicenter of nitrates in our waters

Excessive use of nitrogen fertilizer often results in the contamination of surface and groundwater with nitrates. I know that the standard line from the industry is that nitrogen fertilizer is probably the biggest single cost that growers have, so they are naturally careful with how much they use. Well, the proof is in the pudding and the amount of nitrates in the waters in the Midwest tells a different story. For my talk to the Leavenworth County Master Gardeners, I only looked up information for Minnesota, a state where economic conditions and climate change have allowed for the production of a lot of commodity corn-growing in the last few decades. I suspect that the information for Kansas would be similar.

Local tennis players out early at state tournament

Leavenworth and Lansing tennis players had a short stay at the Class 5A state tournament. Leavenworth freshman Jack Harris, who entered Friday’s state tournament with a 27-1 record after winning the United Kansas Conference and regional tournaments, lost to Blue Valley Southwest’s Vishal Rajkumar 1-6, 2-6 in his first match.

PLAYOFF TIME

The Class 5A softball and baseball regionals are Tuesday. Here are the first round matchups as Basehor-Linwood, Lansing and Leavenworth teams play for a berth in the state tournament.
