Robert “Bob” Wayne Abel, Sr.

Robert “Bob” Wayne Abel, Sr., 84, of Winchester, KS, passed peacefully surrounded by his family on May 11, 2022. His self-proclaimed “Tom Sawyer life” began in Easton, Kansas, on March 10, 1938, with his parents, Rosa M. (Sass) and John L. Abel, Sr. He enjoyed carefree swimming in the creek, fishing and hunting while completing his education at Easton High School. He graduated in 1956. There, he met and married his wife of 62 years, Rose Mary (Winsor) Abel.

Virginia Mangler

Virginia Mangler passed away May 8, 2022, at the age of 62.She enjoyed employment as an RN until her illness which led to her early retirement. She was preceded in death by her parents Marion and Helen Mangler and siblings Sharon Mangler, Sandra Austin and Harold (Tony) Mangler. She is survived by brothers Joseph Mangler and Dr. Victor Mangler, sisters Mary Mangler and Janet Ottingand her beloved Aunt Ginny. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She is greatly missed and loved. Private family service is scheduled at a later date.

Students observe chicks hatching in their classrooms

First-graders at Basehor’s Glenwood Ridge Elementary School got to experience the joy of a new life coming into the world by watching and waiting for chicken eggs to hatch in incubators placed in their classrooms. Each year, the school reaches out to families of students at the school to see if anyone has fertilized chicken eggs that they would allow students to watch and care for the eggs until the chickens hatched.

CLINIC DONATIONS

Members of the Leavenworth Rotary Club and the Lansing Lions Club recently partnered to collect over-the-counter medicines at Dillons for Saint Vincent Clinic. Venture Crew 2165 assisted in the collection as well. Since 2013, the Lansing Lions and Leavenworth Rotarians have collected over $48,000 in supplies and over $9,000 in cash during the semi-annual drive for the clinic. Photography by Tamara Sevcik

UKC CHAMPIONS

After reviewing the psych sheet, Lansing swim coach David Bresser calculated the Lions would need to make up 11 points to defeat De Soto for the United Kansas Conference title. But Lansing showed championships are not won on paper.
