Last week the Docking Institute of Public Affairs at Fort Hays State University published the results from the 2021 Kansas Speaks survey. For those not familiar with Kansas Speaks, it is an annual public opinion survey that gauges public opinion on various issues of interest to Kansas citizens, including public policy.

2 years into pandemic, world takes cautious steps forward

With COVID-19 case numbers plummeting, Emily Safrin did something she hadn’t done since the pandemic began two years ago: She put her fears aside and went to a concert. The fully vaccinated and boosted restaurant server planned to keep her mask on, but as the reggaeton star Bad Bunny took the stage and the energy in the crowd soared, she ripped it off.

Hearing loss through shooting

Shooting in a waterfowl hunting pit, especially with other hunters, is deafening. The same can be said of a shooting range. Studies show that most firearms create noise over the 140-decibel level and exposure to slightly louder noise can permanently damage hearing.

Gerrianne Heim, 69, of Sabetha, Kansas died on Thursday, March 10, 2022 at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha. She was born on September 8, 1952 the daughter of Jerry Donald Nobles and Nota Elizabeth (Oatman) Nobles at Leavenworth, Kansas. Gerrianne married Donald “Don” Robert Heim on October 6, 1984 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Leavenworth. In 1998, Don and Gerrianne moved to Sabetha.

Sister Mary Willoughby

Sister Mary Willoughby, 94, a Sister of Charity of Leavenworth (SCL) for 75 years, died on Dec. 31, 2021, in Ross Hall at the SCL Mother House in Leavenworth, Kan. Sister entered the religious community on Aug. 14, 1946, and served as a long-time school teacher and medical records technician.
